Privacy, Safety, and Trust Aspects of FM-like Marketplaces

Description

Facebook Marketplace (FM for short) is getting increasingly popular these days, regularly attracting large numbers of users. However, FM sellers and buyers are not anonymous, unlike other marketplaces (e.g., Craigslist, eBay, Etsy, Amazon). This could work as a double-edged sword. On the one hand, more transparency about who you are trading with can increase the trust of the marketplace users and promote trade with strangers. On the other hand, the exposure of personal information can increase privacy and safety risks for users. Previous research discussed users’ challenges in social commerce. However, there is no research investigating FM- like platforms’ privacy, safety, and trust challenges and opportunities from users’ perspectives.

The overarching goal of this research is to explore FM users’ challenges related to privacy, safety, and trust, and the advantages of FM-like platforms.
